Canelo Alvarez has canceled his May 5 rematch with Gennady Golovkin, but he doesn’t want fans to think it’s an admission of guilt over his two failed anti-doping tests.
Canelo had this to say today, after withdrawing:
“I am truly shocked by what has happened. I don’t want anyone to have doubts about my integrity. I have always been a clean fighter and will be a clean fighter.
“To my fans, I have not let you down.”
However Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KO) wants to frame this, the fact is boxing fans are let down. Whether he intentionally used clenbuterol or not, he has been forced to withdraw from the biggest fight in boxing because of, at best, negligence. I mean, he did fail the tests.
But Alvarez isn’t saying it’s his fault, which is what should be expected, frankly. He will stick to the story that he was given tainted meat in Mexico, and frankly, he might have been. It could very well be true.
But either way, the fight is off.
