Chris Weidman up for second surgery after unsuccessful rehab of previous injury

Last November, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman revealed that he would be out of action for an indefinite period of time. It was all due to a left thumb injury that he has been dealing with since his fight with Kelvin Gastelum in July.

Weidman told ESPN.com at the time that he would be sidelined for an undetermined period but already had surgery on the injured thumb in September. Apparently, the rehabilitation process did not go so well, which now requires the 33-year-old middleweight fighter to go under the knife once again.

“I had a surgery back after my Gastelum fight and I’ve been on the sidelines and I’ve had some great opportunities offered and I couldn’t take them because I was trying to get the hand better,” Weidman said on a recent interview on the Slip ‘N Dip podcast (transcript via MMA Mania). “And I pretty much found out that it’s not going to get better. I need to get another surgery.”

“So I am getting another surgery in a week and a half. It could be a two-to-three-month recovery and then I should be good to go. It’s been a tough last eight months.”

Weidman defeated Gastelum in front of his hometown crowd in Long Island, New York via third-round submission to break a three-fight losing streak. He currently holds a record of 14-3 (with ten wins by stoppage).
