Canelo has announced that he underwent a surgical procedure to take care of a nagging cyst in his right knee. Here’s what he posted on Instragram.
“I share that today I had to undergo an arthroscopic surgery to repair the internal femoral cartilage and eliminate a pathological fold of my right knee,” Alvarez wrote on social media in comments translated from Spanish. “I dismiss the erroneous information published by Golden Boy president Eric Gomez. Thanks for worrying!! And in three to four weeks I’ll be like new.”
Eric Gomez had previously described the surgery as “cosmetic” but has since come out to clarify that that was not in fact the case.
“He had a cyst taken out of his knee,” Gomez clarified to ESPN on Friday night. “It’s not an injury. Since the fight [with Gennady Golovkin] was canceled, now was the time for him to take care of it. It was something that has been bothering him. And so now, since he isn’t fighting, it was time to take care of it. But he would have been ready to fight on May 5 if there was a fight. There is no structural problem with his knee.”
Canelo obviously had some free time on his hands to take care of this issue as his scheduled May 5th rematch with Gennady Golovkin was nixed over a couple of failed drug tests. The Nevada State Athletic Commission is all but assured to issue Canelo some sort of defined suspension at it’s April 18th hearing, and when that became clear it led to Canelo preemptively pulling out of the fight.
The Mexican star isn’t expected to appear at the Nevada hearing in person, but will instead telephone it in.
