The UFC is heading back to Calgary with a major featherweight clash in tow.
Former UFC champion Jose Aldo will fight Jeremy Stephens in the co-main event of a UFC on FOX show scheduled for the Scotia Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, on July 28, per a report from the Calgary Sun. That report was later shared by the official UFC Canada Twitter account.
Talks of the Aldo vs. Stephens fight were initially reported by Combate.
This marks the UFC’s first trip to Calgary since UFC 149 on July 21, 2012. That card was so light on compelling action that UFC president Dana White expressed his disappointment afterwards, going as far as to say that the event left him feeling “embarrassed”.
Aldo (26-4) will look to bounce back from the first losing streak of his 30-fight career after being TKO’d in consecutive title bouts to Max Holloway. He has lost three of his last four following an 18-fight winning streak that saw him reign as the champion of the UFC and the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion at 145 pounds.
Trending in the opposite direction is Stephens (28-14), who has won three straight bouts. “Lil Heathen” has been with the UFC since 2007 and has gone 8-5 since dropping down from lightweight to featherweight.
Sources told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani that the hope is to schedule UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano’s first title defense vs. Valentina Shevchenko for the main event but that has not been finalized yet.
Per the Calgary Sun, several other bouts have been confirmed by the UFC. See the updated card below (bout order to be determined):
Jose Aldo vs. Jeremy Stephens
Alexis Davis vs. Katlyn Chookagian
Randa Markos vs. Nina Ansaroff
Dustin Ortiz vs. Matheus Nicolau
Gadzhimurad Antigulov vs. Ion Cutelaba
Hakeem Dawodu vs. Austin Arnett
