GEORGE Kambosos Jr. attempts to break into the lucrative American market with his highly anticipated US debut now within reach.
The 24-year-old Sydney native faces hard-hitting albeit limited Panamanian Jose Forero (13-6-1, 11 KOs) as part of Lou DiBella’s signature ‘Broadway Boxing’ series at the Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut.
While the event may be modest and the exposure relatively low-key, there is no denying the ceiling that faces Kambosos if he can impress with his newly-signed promoter.
Having joined the stable of DiBella Entertainment, who form a key part of the Premier Boxing Champions promotional structure, Kambosos (13-0, 7 KOs) will enter the sweepstakes in a division that boasts Mikey Garcia, Jorge Linares, Robert Easter Jr. and Ray Beltran as titleholders.
With the final preparations of his arduous Los Angeles-based training camp now complete, Kambosos looks forward to the business end of his fruitful trip abroad.
“I have had an incredible camp with over 150 rounds of sparring with world rated fighters,” said Kambosos in an interview with Aus-Boxing. “I have once again taken my fight game to another level and look forward to making a huge statement in my American debut under my powerhouse promoter Lou DiBella.”
“I’m in such great condition that if the Panamanian pulled out – and they threw me into the lions den against a world champion – I would be ready to go and win. My focus, dedication and confidence is at an all-time high.”
“This means danger for my opponent and for any of the world rated lightweights or champions in my path.”
The date of Kambosos’ looming stateside appearance has been met with a heightened sense of anticipation, due to the enormity of the Cinco de Mayo weekend, which is arguably the biggest weekend of the boxing calendar alongside Mexican Independence Day.
As the fleet-footed Kambosos admits, it’s a great time to be involved as both a participant and spectator.
“May 5th is a huge day for boxing,” he quipped. “With the likes of Golovkin, Bellew and Haye all fighting, you can definitely feel it. But I’m focused on stealing the limelight with my American debut and making my mark.”
“My camp has been second to none with Justin Fortune, no stone has been left unturned.”
“We have brought out some dangerous weapons to my fight game and we are ready to give the fight fans another level of ‘Ferocious Kambosos’ and execute the game plan and our opponent.”
