Kenny Porter wants his son to land another fight before November and is hoping to get rematch with Keith Thurman next year.
Kenny Porter, the father/trainer of former welterweight titlist Shawn Porter, is actively trying to get his son back in the ring before November while also calling for a rematch with Keith Thurman, as he tells RingTV. And although there would appear to be some options out there for Porter, Kenny does not count welterweight contender Errol Spence Jr. among them.
“That would be an excellent and wonderful fight,” Porter said of a matchup with Spence. “It’s a fight that could possibly happen one day, a little further down the line. Errol hasn’t quite gotten to where we’re at with the people we want to fight right now, the Keith Thurmans, Danny Garcias of the world — those guys who we have unfinished business with.”
The thing Kenny Porter really wants above all is a second helping of Keith Thurman, to whom Shawn Porter lost a close and entertaining decision back in June. Yet knowing that Thurman has now been ordered to defend his WBA title against mandatory challenger David Avanesyan, Porter does not expect the rematch to take place in his next outing. So he’s looking towards the next best thing.
“It’s not something that they want to put out at this point but we’re definitely working hard at what I call the fight before the fight,” Porter said. “It could be a championship fight. It could be a top-10 guy. It could be a rematch. We’re open to all those. Obviously, that was a great fight with Keith and we definitely want to revisit that. As far as if that will be the next fight, that will be determined by the networks and the people that are in place putting things together.”
You tell me, fans. What’s a good next fight for Shawn Porter?
