Light heavyweight Sergey Kovalev has apparently caught wind of Adonis Stevenson’s latest public statements and isn’t fond of them. After Stevenson claimed that it was Kovalev who avoided a showdown a couple years ago Kovalev offered this response to Sky Sports:
“He talks trash! He can say whatever he wants but whatever comes from his mouth is trash,” Kovalev exclusively told Sky Sports.
”I don’t believe anything he says, he is a b**********. To say and do something are two different things, he didn’t back up his words before.”
Kovalev then went on to express his hopes that Badou Jack puts a hurting on Stevenson this Saturday when they square off.
“I hope Badou Jack beats him and gets his title because he’s more motivated and busier than ‘Chickenson’. ‘Chickenson’ manages to keep his belt somehow, it’s strange and I don’t understand it.”
That comment is of course a reference to how Stevenson has managed keep his WBC light heavyweight world title without making a mandatory title defense since facing Tony Bellew in 2013 (although WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman sort of disputes that time line). But however Sulaiman wants to frame it, it’s been a ridiculous amount of time.
Anyway, Kovalev also expressed his interest in taking on Badou Jack if he should win this weekend as he believes that’ll be an easier fight to make. Kovalev says ready and willing to unify light heavyweight world titles and that he’s prepared for all-comers.
