Golden Boy VP Eric Gomez is starting to piece together the immediate future of Canelo Alvarez’s career. Gomez tells RingTV that while he’s planning on talking to Frank Warren about a potential fight with Billy Joe Saunders this December, they’re also strongly considering pitting the winner of Gabe Rosado vs. Willie Monroe against their cash cow.

“The big prize is Canelo,” Gomez said on a conference call on Monday to hype the Sept. 17 undercard at AT&T Stadium on HBO PPV. “The winner of (Rosado-Monroe) could very well be fighting Canelo in December.”

Rosado and Monroe are scheduled to go head-to-head as the Canelo-Smith co-feature next month, where Gomez was originally trying to schedule Saunders against either Rosado or Monroe, but Saunders elected to pass on both fights. Yet despite his inability to secure Saunders for this upcoming card, he’s still open to negotiating with him for a December fight against Canelo.

“We’re keeping all the doors open,” Gomez said. “Obviously, we weren’t able to get the fight done with Billy Joe Saunders. I haven’t closed the door yet. But look, we got two guys that are going to go at it. This is a real fight. Gabe wants to prove that he still belongs and is in the upper echelon of boxing. And Willie Monroe wants to do the same thing. If these guys put on a great fight and a great show, we’re going to keep all avenues open, all doors open. I don’t see why the winner of this fight shouldn’t get a Canelo fight.”

Both Rosado and Monroe declined to talk about a potential fight against Canelo, knowing that they’ll have to get past one another in a couple weeks before that could become a realistic option.
