Welterweight Amir Khan (32-4, 20 KOs) will be back in action this fall where he’s scheduled to face Samuel Vargas (29-3-2, 14 KOs) on Sept. 8 at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. This bout will mark Khan’s second outing since taking a nearly two-year hiatus from the sport after getting sparked by Canelo Alvarez in 2016.

Since then Khan, 31, took some time off and sorted out some nagging injuries before returning this past April to make 39 seconds of work against Phil Lo Greco.

Speaking of this next phase of his career Khan says that he’s trying to keep active as he tries to work his way back to the elite level of the sport, telling ESPN:

“One of my aims this year was to be as active as possible, so I’m very happy to get back in the ring again so soon against Samuel Vargas,” Khan said.

“I have to get past Vargas before looking at the biggest challenges going forward. I’m not going to be taking Vargas lightly because I know he will be coming with everything on Sept. 8.”

Vargas, 29, is coming off a majority draw against Mauro Maximiliano Godoy a few weeks ago. Before that he won four straight against lesser opposition since getting stopped by Danny Garcia in late 2016.
