WBO middleweight titleholder Billy Joe Saunders has found himself without a big fight — or a fight at all after pulling out of a fight with Martin Murray. So as Saunders looks towards his next movehe tells WBN that a potential fight with James DeGale has been discussed but that he’s left it in the hands of his promoter Frank Warren and his MTK management team.
“I’ve got no problem moving up to 12st, I’m not a little 11st 6lb fight, I’m quite broad for it. My natural weight is middleweight but I’d certainly move up.
“It’d be a great fight between myself and DeGale, a very good fight for both of us and it’d be a game of chess for a few rounds but once somebody sustains a lead the other would have to roll the dice. Me and him have sparred which people would pay to watch.”
Saunders is most recently coming off of a dominant performance over David Lemieux, but that was last December and Saunders has never really been the model of activity. It appeared that he was lining himself up for a full unification with Gennady Golovkin recently when his talks with Canelo hit a standstill, but after pulling out of the Murray fight and Canelo and Golovkin got their deal over the finish line, Saunders is without a dance partner.
Who would you like to see Saunders take on next?
