What’s an MMA superstar to do when celebrating their 30th birthday? Dirty Thirty is thought of as the turning point of going from a wild and carefree youth to a more responsible, conscientious adult. For most, it’s just another birthday, but for Conor McGregor, it’s a milestone that will be celebrated with the ultimate gift, a £50,000 (that’s $66,401.05 USD) statue to commemorate his life.
Lithuanian artist Edgar Askelovic (known as Aspencrow) just finished the sculpture, made from marble and silicone. It weighs in at 224 pounds and will be on display at London’s JD Malat Gallery from July 14th through September 30th. The statue, known as “Atlas,” will be given to McGregor as a gift from Askelovic following its run at the gallery. Askelovic had this to say about why he created the incredible piece, as reported by Versus:
“He is a phenomenon of our time – not just a smart athlete, but also a visionary. To create the piece, I looked back to antiquity, when athletes were immortalised in sculptures as gods.
And I combined some details from a Michelangelo statue with modern day graffiti to capture the present day’s warrior sensibilities.”
Gareth Davies of The Telegraph tweeted out images of the object d’art:
