Jerwin Ancajas to return on September 14

IBF super flyweight titleholder Jerwin Ancajas will return to the ring on September 14 in Fresno, where he’ll be in the co-feature fight to a Jose Ramirez-led card on ESPN.

Ancajas, 26, has fought two times this year, beating Israel Gonzalez on February 3 via TKO, and then following that up with a main event in Fresno on May 26, where he outpointed fellow Filipino Jonas Sultan in a mandatory title defense.

According to co-manager Sean Gibbons, two opponents are being considered to face Ancajas (30-1-1, 20 KO) in September.

One is Mexico’s Alejandro Santiago (16-2-4, 7 KO), a 22-year-old coming off of a draw in his last bout on March 24. He has zero quality wins in his career. The other is Chile’s Miguel Gonzalez (28-1, 6 KO), who has fought at home his entire career save for a 2013 bout in the United Kingdom where he was outpointed easily by Paul Butler.

In other words, the Ancajas side isn’t looking for anything particularly big right now, just another showcase title defense before, hopefully, targeting the bigger names at 115, which they say is the plan. That rumored unification bout with Kal Yafai is clearly not coming off in September, and they’re not looking at opponents near that level, either.
