Lee Selby: ‘I’m coming back a different fighter’

Lee Selby is moving up to super featherweight following his May 19 IBF featherweight title loss against Josh Warrington, and is promising a good run at the new weight, which he says he’s felt he should’ve moved to for some time now.

“This is the second chapter for me, I’m coming back a different fighter. … I knew I had to move up from featherweight, but I had a world title and there were always big fights out there. I don’t regret it. I was getting away with it because of my skills. In my head, I just thought that because of what I’d been doing in sparring, I would never get beat. … I worked so hard to become a champion, there was no way I was just going to give up my title.”

Selby admits “the performance wasn’t there at all” against Warrington. The 31-year-old fighter has won featherweight titles at the Commonwealth, British, European, and world level, and held his world title for just shy of three years.

We’ll have to see what he can offer at 130, but he should be an interesting addition to a solid division. If he wants to stay with the IBF as his sanctioning body of choice, Tevin Farmer just won the 130-pound title with them, and that potential matchup could be an interesting clash of boxing styles, Selby a solid technician against the slickness of Farmer.
