Stipe Miocic wows his home crowd in his maiden title defense by knocking out Alistair Overeem in the first round.
After being put to the test by being knocked down by a straight left hand, Stipe Miocic was able to impress his home crowd by coming out with the win. The Cleveland native weathered the storm, en route to a first round knockout victory.
What is the high point of the fight?
It was an all-action contest throughout the four minutes of the fight. With both men bearing heavy hands, there came a point where they were on the receiving end of hard punches.
Overeem was softened up by Miocic’s flurry in the middle of the round, which led him being taken down. From there, the former PRIDE FC veteran had no answers to the champion’s strikes from up top.
Where do these two go from here?
Miocic’s victory likely earns him a crack at former champion and current number-two ranked contender Cain Velasquez, who is coming off an impressive win against Travis Browne atUFC 200.
Overeem was coming off a four-fight winning streak before he was stopped by Miocic. He is still deserving to fight a top-five fighter, which could be against Ben Rothwell or Junior Dos Santos.
Watch it now, later, never?
It was a fight between two of the hardest-hitting heavyweights in the division today. Definitely a must-watch contest.
