David Lemieux and Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan are squared away to do battle on the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin undercard Sept. 15, in a fight that has the potential to steal the show. Both middleweights are come-forward punchers who like to slug it out, so there’s really one way this fight plays out — and there will be blood!

Outside of the ring, of course, both fighters have a propensity for trash talk as well, and that’s exactly what they’ve been doing to one another in the promotional build up. Yesterday’s media conference call between the fighters highlighted as much…

From RingTV:

“Look at David, he doesn’t look like a guy that trains like I do,” O’Sullivan said. ” … He gets tired easily in a lot of his fights. I don’t think he can win this fight. I think he’s a one-trick pony, he just does the same thing over and over again. I know what’s going to be coming.”

When Lemieux spoke up he explained that he’s been dealing with lingering injuries in his recent fights, saying he fought Billy Joe Saunders with a torn labrum that impeded his ability to throw punches effectively. But with that not being an issue heading into this fight, he expects to put on a performance that will humble O’Sullivan.

“This fight is definitely going to go my way, you guys watch and see, I’m going to make Spike eat all his words,” he said. “Don’t worry, I’m going to beat your ass, it’s not going to be no walk in the park. I’m not coming here to lose, I’m coming to destroy you. Don’t take me lightly, keep working hard in the gym, you’re going to need it.”

This middleweight clash should definitely be on everyone’s “must-see” list because it promises to be fireworks from the opening bell. But the question remains: who do you think has the advantage in this fight?
