Canadian welterweight Jordan Mein is returning to MMA, just over one year after announcing his retirement from the sport.
It’s been well over a year since Jordan Mein was stopped by a vicious Thiago Alves body kick at UFC 183. Just months after his defeat, the Canadian welterweight announced his retirement from the sport, citing (per Ariel Helwani) that he was “burnt out” and “lost that fire” to compete.
Fast forward to today, and the 26-year-old is apparently ready to step in the Octagon once again. After Bas Rutten had stated on the Joe Rogan Experience that Mein was making his comeback, Jordan’s father, Lee Mein, confirmed the story to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.
“I am happy he is enjoying training and wants to fight again,” Lee said. “I feel he is one of the best out there.
“As long as he is having fun and feels healthy, I will support and help him any way I can.”
Jordan Mein may be just 26 years old, but he’s been fighting professionally since 2006, with his debut coming against none other than Bellator MMA’s Rory MacDonald. Whereas Rory’s pro career consists of 22 fights, Mein has nearly double that total, with a record of 29-10, of which 5 of them took place in the UFC. His biggest UFC win was a 1st round knockout of Mike Pyle in August 2014. He’s also faced the likes of Tyron Woodley, Joe Riggs, Matt Brown, Josh Burkman, Mike Ricci, Jason High, Marius Zaromskis, and Evangelista Santos.
MMA Oddsbreaker’s James Lynch also spoke with Lee Mein, who noted that “is still under UFC contract. Waiting on USADA rules to get cleared to fight.” Jordan is targeting an October return, but barring an exemption, he’ll have to enter the USADA drug-testing pool for four months, which would push his comeback date to at least January 2017.
