Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn makes it clear that Kell Brook is targeting his next big fight — but that fight will likely have to come at 147lbs despite Brook’s difficulty making that weight at this point.
Hearn says that rival Amir Khan will have to make a decision within a couple weeks of presumably beating Samuel Vargas — who he fights this weekend — whether or not he’ll face Brook by the end of the year. He also advises Brook to start cutting weight now because if the Khan fight doesn’t happen, he’ll still have a shot to land a fight with Manny Pacquiao, but that too would necessitate him coming in at the welterweight limit.
“I met with Pacquiao’s people last week as well, and if Khan is too expensive for Pacquiao, because Pacquiao is very expensive, Pacquiao could fight Brook.
”But Brook is going to have to be at 147[lbs] to fight either of those two. He has to start now.”
Hearn continues by saying that he’s still confident in Brook’s ability to still make 147, but that it will probably take him a full 16 weeks in order to do so. “
“Could Brook steal the Pacquiao fight, and Amir is left with nothing? Is Brook about to gate crash the Pacquiao-Khan fight? It’s wide open for anybody to fight anybody.”
Khan has been shouting for a fight with Pacquiao for several years now, but if Brook were able to swoop in and get the fight instead of him it would just add yet another wrinkle to their longstanding feud.
