Colby Covington hopes that the sacrifices Darren Till has made in his career were worth it.
Till’s failed attempt to wrest the welterweight championship away from Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC 228 on Saturday proved to be the perfect fodder for Covington to feast on. The one-sided submission loss that Woodley handed the 25-year-old Englishman has convinced Covington that Till was never worthy of challenging Woodley in the first place, and it also left the door open for Covington to potentially meet Woodley at a future date (Covington is eyeing the UFC 230 main event) in what he is calling “the biggest grudge match in UFC history.”
During an appearance on The Luke Thomas Show on Monday, Covington was asked to comment on Till’s performance and he didn’t hold back. He mocked Till twice missing weight in the UFC and for past comments in which Till said that his only concern was becoming a champion, seemingly disregarding both his pregnant girlfriend and his daughter (Till later explained how his words were blown out of proportion).
Covington also found Till’s wins over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson to be unimpressive.
“Till’s just an overrated doughboy that had a whole lot of hype,” Covington said. “He talked the talk, but he couldn’t walk the walk like me so he needs to leave it to the big boys. He beat a crippled old ‘Clownboy’ and got a gift in his hometown against the ‘Choirboy’. He should have never been rewarded with a title shot for missing weight in a third of his UFC fights.
“Good thing he neglected his family to land a hot zero significant strikes in two rounds.”
The next name brought up to Covington was top contender Kamaru Usman. UFC officials made the prudent decision to have Usman on-hand as a backup should either Woodley or Till be forced to withdraw from UFC 228 for whatever reason, but the main event fight eventually went off without a hitch.
That amused Covington to no end, and he took shots at his rival who is undefeated in eight Octagon appearances.
“That broke b*tch ‘Marty’ ain’t even in the picture,” Covington said. “What happened to that feeling in his soul that he was going to be champ last weekend? Ha ha ha, Saturday night was the closest he’ll ever get to a title fight and that’s front row like the mark he is. That bitch is my biggest fan. He talks a lot of s**t about me, but he won’t do s**t but keep watching my greatness from the sidelines, junior.”
Lastly, Covington was asked to address a viral clip of famous rapper Snoop Dogg excitedly cursing and shouting racial slurs while watching Woodley’s win over Till. At one point, Snoop Dogg starts yelling, “F**k Donald Trump”, which made it sound like he was confusing Till, an Englishman, with Covington, a noted supporter of the current president.
Whether he was the intended target of Snoop Dogg’s vitriol or not, Covington let it be known that he’s not a fan of the “Doggfather”.
“Snoop Dogg needs to get checked for Tourette’s,” Covington said. “Have you seen that malnourished twig hit the mitts? It’s a sight to be seen, it’s a joke. He needs to stick his a**hole-ness to rapping and get used to Donald Trump being his president for the next six-and-a-half years.”
