SAO PAULO, Brazil — Renan Barao has badly missed weight for his UFC Sao Paulo fight withAndre Ewell.
The former UFC bantamweight champion stepped on the scale Friday morning and weighed in at 141.6 pounds, which is five pounds over the bantamweight limit.
The fight though will go on with Barao fined 30 percent of his show purse, and all the money will go to Ewell.
Barao (34-6, 1 no-contest), who has dealt with weight-cutting problems in the past, has only won two of six bouts since losing the UFC title to T.J. Dillashaw in 2014. The American Top Team fighter is looking to snap a two-fight skid.
Ewell (13-4) makes his Octagon debut Saturday night after scoring four straight victories, all by stoppages, in the regional circuit.
UFC Sao Paulo takes place at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium and features Thiago Santos vs. Eryk Anders in the main event.
