Credit to Carlo Pedersoli Jr. for taking an opponent of Alex Oliveira’s caliber on just a month’s notice, but the co-main event of UFC Sao Paulo wasn’t much of a fight.
Fighting in front of his Brazilian countrymen, the Rio de Janeiro native made short work of Pedersoli, needing just 39 seconds to score the knockout win Saturday night.
“I fight with all my heart,” Oliveira (20-4-1, 2 NC) said through an interpreter. “I fought for all you guys.”
Pedersoli threw a low kick just seconds into the bout. Oliveira caught the kick, drilled Pedersoli with a right to the temple which dropped him, and then unleashed a swarm on the ground until the bout was waved off.
“My coach said ‘let your hands go,’” the victor said. “You’ve got heavy hands and he’s not going to be able to take it.”
With the victory, Oliveira, who had earned post-fight bonuses in three of his four previous bouts, has now won two in a row and four of his past five, with all the wins in that span coming by way of finish.
Pedersoli (11-2), who was a replacement for Neil Magny, had an eight-fight win streak snapped.
