The former heavyweight champion is open to another bout in Mexico City, provided he makes some serious adjustments to his training camp.
UFC 188 was the first time we saw Cain Velasquez unable to maintain his frenetic pace. The American Kickboxing Academy standout, who is renown for his tireless work ethic and endless cardio, was overwhelmed by Fabricio Werdum after running out of steam in the second round.
Velasquez started off strong, forcing Werdum against the cage and utilizing the dirty boxing that knocked Junior dos Santos off the top-spot in 2012. However, Velasquez soon began to tire and Werdum capitalized with his own pressure and eventually snagged a guillotine choke in the third round, relieving Cain of his championship duty.
Although Werdum was given credit for win, many fans suspected that the high altitude of Mexico City at Arena Ciudad de Mexico had something to do with Velasquez’ questionable performance. Several other fighters on the card, including Eddie Alvarez and Gilbert Melendez, also looked sub-par on fight night. MMA veteran Nate Marquardt had problems with his blood pressure backstage, which he also attributed to the high-altitude of the Mexican capital.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Velasquez said he’s open to fighting in Mexico City again with a different training regime.
“If the opportunity would come up, yeah, I would go there,” Velasquez said, per Dave Doyle of MMA Fighting. “I would be prepared and do my whole training camp out there and get a win in front of them. I would have to do the whole thing. I would feel much better, me and my whole team, to be out there, and training out there and do whole training camp out there. I think it’s that big of a difference to be going there early. Two weeks just wasn’t enough, it needs to be whole training camp out there, eight weeks, nine weeks in training.”
The 34-year-old spent the majority of his camp at AKA in San Jose, travelling to Mexico City just two weeks before the event. Werdum, however, wisely spent his entire training camp in Tolcua, Mexico, preparing at an elevation of 8,730 ft.
With current heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic opting to take a short break, it’s likely that Velasquez vs. Werdum II will take place at UFC 207 on Dec. 30, although the bout will be contested at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
