After getting his first taste of the big stage and bright lights when he fought Gennady Golovkin, Kell Brook is looking for second helpings. Admitting to Sky Sports that fighting at 160lbs was perhaps a bridge too far, Brook says he expects to move down a division where he can hopefully land another big money fight with Canelo Alvarez.
“I think 154lbs would be more my weight class. I need to get back training and see if I could make 147lbs healthily — that’s also a possibility because I’m a world champion at 147lbs.
“I’d love that fight with Canelo. I just want to be in those big fights. I had a taste with the Golovkin fight and the attention around it is exciting for a fighter to be in.”
Brook continues by saying that he has surgery planned for this Friday to repair his broken eye socket, courtesy of a Golovkin left hand.
“They’re looking to put a titanium plate in the eye but they’re looking at other materials. They’re not rushing it but it looks like this Friday. I’m more scared of getting put to sleep than I was of getting in with Golovkin!”
Brook will be unable to spar in preparation for another fight for at least a few months, but is expected to return next Spring which would’ve otherwise been the case anyway. He says he’ll be sure to follow doctor’s orders to make sure his injury is completely healed before resuming any dangerous activities.
