Danny Roman wants to unify after stopping Gavin McDonnell in third world title defence

Australian-based boxing journalist Anthony Cocks has been covering the sport for over 15 years for various print and online publications. He refuses to believe that Roberto Duran ever lost to Tommy Hearns and says that Jeff Fenech would destroy Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali on the same night.

WBA super bantamweight champion Danny Roman 26-2-1 (10) wants to unify the 122-pound division after defeating England’s Gavin McDonnell 20-2-2 (5) by tenth round TKO at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Saturday night.

“’ll fight any of the other champions in this division,” said Roman, who has now won 18 fights in a row. “Let’s make a unification fight. I want all the belts.”

Ghanaian hotshot Isaac Dogboe 20-0 (14) holds the WBO 122-pound championship, while Mexico’s Rey Vargas 32-0 (22) is the WBC boss. Australian-based Irishman TJ Doheny is the IBF kingpin.

Roman controlled the bout against McDonnell from the start to finish. The 28-year-old American champion applied pressure behind his high guard to break down and stop the taller McDonnell.

After bloodying the 32-year-old McDonnell’s nose in the fifth Roman continued to stalk his opponent, landing solid punches to the body and head.

“I wanted to go to the body. We needed to break him down,” said Roman after the fight.

By the tenth round Roman was streets ahead on the cards and could’ve been forgiven for boxing his way to a points decision. But Roman knew he could hurt his man and wanted to finish the fight with a bang.

“The right hand landed early in the fight so we knew it was going to be there,” said Roman. “I just had to wait for the right time. It was there in the tenth.

“I landed a strong right to his chin that buckled him. I followed up with two left uppercuts and that was it for him.”
