For a minute there, it looked like Kurt Holobaugh was going to get his elusive first UFC victory.
Then the Bronx’s Shane Burgos finished the fight in a New York minute.
Burgos kept his composure after being dropped by a nifty combo earlier in their featherweight fight at UFC 230. When Holobaugh followed him to the ground, Burgos needed a mere matter of seconds to end the bout with an armbar. The time of the finish at New York’s Madison Square Garden was 2:11 of the opening round.
“One million percent I thought we’d meet and the center and the first to go down would win,” Burgos said. “He dropped me I’m happy I won but I’m pissed I got dropped, I’m a perfectionist.”
The bout got off to a crisp and fast-paced start, with both guys landing with jabs and giving as good as they got. Holobaugh scored the first big blow of the bout with a three-punch right-left-right combo, a left to the jaw being the biggest blow. But as soon as Burgos cleared the cobwebs on the mat, he was able to bait his opponent for the winning armbar.
“Yeah man everyone says my ground game is good,” Burgos said. “As an amateur and as a professional I’ll jump guard all day.”
With his ninth career finish, Burgos (11-1) shook off his UFC 120 loss to Calvin Kattar and improved to 4-1 in the UFC. Holobaugh dropped to 17-6 and is 0-3 with a no-contest in the UFC.
