Ray Borg ruled out of fight against Joseph Benavidez at UFC Denver

Ray Borg just can’t seem to buy a break.

The former UFC flyweight title challenger has been ruled out of his UFC Denver matchup with longtime contender Joseph Benavidez due to reportedly what’s been termed “medical issues.” MMA Fighting confirmed an initial Wednesday report by MMA Junkie.

Borg has undergone a series of issues dating back more than a year. He was scheduled to face then-champion Demetrious Johnson for the 125-pound title at UFC 215, but had to withdraw two days before the fight due to an illness. Borg eventually lost to Johnson at UFC 216.

He was then scheduled to meet Brandon Moreno at UFC 223, however, shards of glass ended up in his eye as a result of Conor McGregor’s infamous van attack following a media day at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and that fight was canceled.

Most seriously, Borg’s newborn son has battled brain cancer, a public plight for which MMA fans have donated significant amounts of money, but also caused him to pull out of a rescheduled date with Moreno.

A new opponent will not be found for Benavidez, who has fought once since Dec. 2016, for Saturday’s UFC Denver card, which is headlined by Chan Sung Jung vs. Yair Rodriguez.
