WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (29-1-1, 24 KOs) is set to make his next worthwhile title defense this weekend when he takes on Oleksandr Gvozdyk (15-0, 12 KOs). And leading into the bout Stevenson tells Sky Sports that he’s hoping to unify titles in the near future.
“I am open to fight any of the champions, Beterbiev, Alvarez or Bivol, any of them. It’s not a problem for me.
”Al Haymon can sort that all out. I am nothing to do with negotiating or stuff like that. He is my agent but I am hoping to fight anyone to unify the titles.”
Stevenson is most recently coming off a majority draw with Badou Jack back in December, and with the draw Stevenson, 41, was able to retain his world title. Stevenson says he’s not interested in rematch Jack, believing he “dominated” the fight, but Gvozdyk, 31, is at least another worthy opponent (not to mention his mandatory challenger).
But at this point Stevenson has built a reputation for taking the path of least resistance, even if this particular fight was sort of forced on him, so one must wonder how badly he’ll be looking to make some of the most dangerous fights out there for him. Something tells me a lot of it will depend on this title defense pans out.
