WBA super middleweight titleholder Rocky Fielding may be the reigning champion in his Dec. 15 bout against Canelo Alvarez, but he’s certainly not the favorite to win. However Fielding tells ESPN that with Canelo moving to up his weight class, where he comfortably campaigns, he’s feeling good about his ability to upset the odds.

“You know at my weight now, at my super middleweight, I’m confident and I believe it,” Fielding told ESPN. “I wouldn’t take the fight if he asked me to go down to middleweight, obviously it would then be a different story.

”But it’s my weight. I’m big, I’m strong and I’m confident I can go in there, upset everyone and shock the world. I wouldn’t take it if I didn’t believe it. I’m going there as a world champion and I’m going to fight like a world champion and perform like one.”

Fielding (27-1, 15 KOs) is most recently coming off a stoppage win over Tyron Zeuge in July when he grabbed the WBA strap, but he’s certainly never faced a fighter the caliber of Canelo. In fact the best opponent Fielding has ever fought (at least on paper) was Callum Smith in late 2015, in a fight where Smith stopped him in the first round.

Meanwhile Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) is coming off a majority decision victory over Gennady Golovkin in their September rematch, with talks of a potential third fight in play should Golovkin sign with streaming platform DAZN.
