Our prayers go out to former light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, who still remains unconscious in the intensive care unit of Quebec City’s Hopital de l’Enfant-Jesusstill. Stevenson suffered a knockout loss and a serious brain injury at the hands of Oleksandr Gvozdyk on Dec. 1, when he attempted to defend his WBC title.

Stevenson, 41, was obviously hurt by the final few blows that ended that contest, but he seemed to be relatively okay once he got back up and made his way to the locker room. Unfortunately his condition quickly deteriorated once he got to the back, necessitating an emergency trip to the hospital.

Once at the hospital Stevenson underwent surgery and was placed in a medically induced coma in order to curb the swelling in his brain. Stevenson’s condition, however, has not improved in the weeks since, and still requires a machine to help him breathe.

Dr. Alexis Turgeon, an intensive care specialist, noted that most people end up with lasting injuries in these cases, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a Christmas miracle.
