By Robert CosterPromoter Jacques Deschamps has announced that WIBF world jr lightweight champion and WBC silver champion Melissa St Vil will travel to Haiti to fight on a card scheduled for November 16th. Says Promoter Deschamps, “Melissa, born in Long Island, is Haitian-American and very proud of her roots. Melisssa and I talked and she mentioned to me her desire to help the victims of Hurricane Matthew that hit the south of Haiti very hard. What better way than giving national pride to the Haitian people by having a sports figure like Melissa doing what she does best – fight.”

Fightnews.com® reached Melissa St Vil at her base in Brooklyn to know more about her. She answered our questions in honest, outspoken fashion.

Melissa, promoter Deschamps says you are very enthusiastic about the prospect of fighting in Haiti, especially after the disaster caused by Hurricane Matthew.

Yes, going to Haiti and boxing there is my way of helping. I want to make the people there proud.

Your last fight was an upset victory over Dominican star Kathy Wilson in China who stepped into the ring with an 18-1 record. You want to talk about that?

Why was it an upset? I was the defending champion and I beat her. The only one upset was Kathy who left China beltless.

After that big victory, how do you feel about the future?

That win over Kathy Wilson showed that I can be there with the big dogs. I don’t want to be like the fake champions fighting bums.

How did you get into boxing?

It was my outlet. As a teen I was a violent, angry girl.

You also have done some modeling. Which do you prefer?

Boxing, of course. There’s nothing like having your arm raised in victory.

Do you have family in Haiti?

I have my uncle and my aunt, both schoolteachers.

Any message for the people over there?

My victory over my opponent will be their victory.
