The numbers are reportedly even lower than Alvarez’s fight with Erislandy Lara.
Well this was entirely expected.
Canelo Alvarez’s blockbuster showdown with Liam Smith, which saw the Mexican superstar fell “Beefy” with a ninth-round body shot, did not wind up busting many blocks. In addition to filling just 52,000 of AT&T Stadium’s 100,000 seats, the pay-per-view received a paltry 300,000 buys according to ESPN.
For comparison on the latter, Canelo’s fight with Amir Khan did 600,000. Even his fight with Alfredo Angulo out-sold his latest effort with 350,000. These numbers are comparable to the Erislandy Lara fight.
I suppose it’s about as good as can be expected when Willie Monroe Jr. vs. Gabriel Rosado was the co-main event and high-profile names like Luis Ortiz and Billy Joe Saunders pulled out. I’d say something like “hopefully this will convince people not to but crap fights on pay-per-view” but even I, a man whose recent gambling record demonstrates zero concept of pattern recognition, am not naive enough to say something like that.
