No one appears to be on the same page when it comes to the UFC welterweight title picture.

A week after UFC president Dana White told MMAjunkie that Kamaru Usman is the next man in line for the 170-pound championship against either welterweight king Tyron Woodley or former interim titleholder Colby Covington, “The Chosen One” is clearly targeting another match-up.

Usman tweeted Wednesday night that he had signed a contract to compete for the welterweight gold in March, referring to the UFC 235 pay-per-view card slated for Las Vegas on March 2, and that prompted a quick response from Woodley.

From that moment on, two of the best welterweights in the world engaged in a verbal war on social media.

Woodley (19-3-1) last defended his title in September, submitting previously unbeaten Darren Tillwith a d’arce choke at UFC 228. “The Chosen One” fought four times in 12 months between July 2016, when he won the belt, and July 2017.

Usman (14-1) is hoping to get a crack at the gold after winning nine straight under the UFC banner since 2015, including victories over former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and two-time UFC title contender Demian Maia.

Also in the mix is Covington (14-1), who won the interim belt with a decision victory over Rafael dos Anjos in June before seeing the title get stripped a few months later. “Chaos” also holds a decision victory over Maia in his current winning streak.
