Tyson Fury says he wants to follow the script from the original ‘Rocky’ movie by fighting some unknown fighter if he’s unable to get a rematch against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder or a title shot against IBF/WBA/WBO champion Anthony Joshua. Fury (27-0-1, 19 KOs) would like to fight Wilder again, but if he can’t get a fight against him or Joshua, he’ll go the Rocky movie route by picking out some unknown guy and giving him a shot at his lineal title.
In other words, Fury will pick another Sefer Seferi type fighter, and look to pad his record with a soft job. Fury seems to think the boxing public will be interested in seeing him fight another obscure fighter. His thinking seems to be kind of warped right now. Someone needs to tell Fury to stop watching television, and focus on what’s really important, fighting the best in boxing. No one wants to see Fury pick out some poor sap to beat up. Most of Fury’s wins during his career have come against weak obscure fighters with little talent. Fury doesn’t need to take his career backwards to an earlier stage of his development.
“I do want a rematch, so let’s get it on,” Wilder said to MTK Global. “I’m interested in big fights. I’m not interested in anything else. [Anthony] Joshua doesn’t want the fight. If Wilder is watching, it should be easy to do it the second time. I just want the rematch. If Wilder doesn’t want it…All I’m thinking about is what Rocky [Balboa] did in the ‘Rocky’ movie. Just get some random person that never had a chance against anybody, and give him a shot at the lineal champion of the world. Some random person, and give him a shot, just like Apollo Creed did against Rocky,” Fury continued.
The problem with Fury fighting another obscure guy is that many of the top fighters in boxing are doing the same thing, and it’s no longer a novelty for fighters to do this. There’s no glory in Fury doing what other fighters are doing because it’s a sad race to the bottom. Instead of Fury wanting to emulate the other fighters by facing guys that no one has ever heard of before, he should be trying to set an example of what true warriors do by taking on the best possible opponent available, be it Wilder, Joshua, Luis Ortiz or Dillian Whyte.
“Apart from Joshua and Wilder, there’s nobody else out there,” Fury said. If those two big fights don’t happen, I’ll give somebody a chance. Just some random person. Hopefully, they’ll be Italian. The Italian Stallion vs. The Gypsy King. I’m not on social media anymore. I made the decision while I was in camp for the Deontay Wilder fight. I made the decision that I’m not going to go on social media anymore. Only on an occasion, I’ll pop up there,” Fury said.
