Porter will make the first defense of his WBC crown

WBC welterweight champion Shawn Porter, before facing Danny Garcia with whom he won the world crown, said he was aware of what it meant for him to win the green and gold belt.

Porter fulfilled his dream in September, after defeating Garcia in what was a very competitive action-packed fight; Danny Garcia was ranked # 1, while Porter ranked # 2 on the WBC charts.

On March 9, in a Premier Boxing Champions undercard in Las Vegas, the WBC welterweight champion will make the first defense against Cuban Yordenis Ugás.

Porter defined Ugas as a “ghost” at 147 pounds, implying that very few calibrated the talent of the Olympic medalist in professional boxing.

“This is a situation similar to what happened to me in 2013, when I defeated Devon Alexander,” said Porter. “No one knew who I was. It was supposed to be another victory for Devon Alexander but I defeated him. I will not allow that to happen to me with Ugás.

Porter knows Ugás partly because both held a sparring session when the Cuban was preparing for his fight against Levan Ghvamichava in February 2017.
