Lockridge (44-9, 36 KO) won his first world title in 1984 with a stunning 91-second knockout of Roger Mayweather. He would eventually lose the WBA belt to Wilfredo Gomez via majority decision, fight a mid-streak Julio Cesar Chavez to another majority decision, and finally claim the IBF belt with an eighth-round finish of Barry Michael.
Lockridge’s first bout with Tony Lopez was named the Ring Magazine “Fight of the Year” for 1988.
After his retirement in 1992, Lockridge struggled with substance abuse, culminating in a now-legendary appearance on A&E’s “Intervention.”
Lockridge remained sober from 2009 until his passing this morning from post-stroke complications.
Rest in peace, champ.
