Sam Alvey finally made it onto a pay-per-view card in his 17th UFC fight. But he didn’t get much of a chance to show what he could do on the big stage.
Alvey fought Jim Crute in the PPV opener at UFC 234 on Saturday night. But a stoppage that perhaps came a bit too soon got in the way, as Crute was declared the TKO winner at the 2:49 mark at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.
“Have you heard of Jimmy F*cking Crute?” the victor asked.
No doubt, the fight wasn’t going Alvey’s way. Crute dropped him early with a big right to the jaw, then made the mistake of backing off, assuming referee Marc Goddard would wave things off, which he didn’t.
That enabled Alvey to get back into the fight, but Crute dropped him again, and started throwing right hands. Approximately half the punches thrown either landed on Alvey’s arm, hit the mat, or missed entirely, and Alvey gave Goddard a thumbs-up. but Goddard waved the bout off.
Alvey immediately popped up to his feet protesting the decision, and stormed out of the cage once the decision was rendered.
The Australian Crute improved to 10-0 with his seventh career finish. Alvey (33-12, 1 NC) has now dropped two in a row.
