Former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre may be hanging up his four-ounce gloves for good.
On Wednesday morning, RDS’s Benoit Beaudoin reported St-Pierre plans to announce his retirement from mixed martial arts after failing to secure a fight against lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
In terms of competition St-Pierre (26-2), who is widely considered one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters MMA History, has not competed since dethroning former middleweight champion Michael Bisping at UFC 217 in November 2017. However, 34 days after winning gold, St-Pierre vacated his new title due to complications with ulcerative colitis.
His win over Bisping not only made him the fourth fighter, at the time, to win UFC titles in two separate wight classes but marked his first walk to the Octagon since November 2013, when fans saw him successfully defend his 170-pound crown against Johny Hendricks at UFC 167. “Rush” would later voluntarily vacate his welterweight title to take an extended hiatus from MMA.
The French-Canadian legend currently holds several UFC records, including most wins in UFC title fights (13), most wins by decision in UFC history (12), most takedowns in UFC history (90) as well as the most consecutive title defenses in UFC welterweight history (9). St-Pierre also holds notable over Nick Diaz, B.J. Penn, Matt Hughes, Josh Koscheck and Jake Shields.
