In what was by all accounts a terrific scrap, Sam Eggington overpowered Frankie Gavin for an eighth-round TKO yesterday in Birmingham.

Eggington (19-3, 11 KO), two fights removed from losing his BBBofC belt to Bradley Skeete in March, forced two counts before ultimately polishing his foe off. Gavin (23-2, 14 KO), who missed the welterweight limit by nearly three pounds, gave a tremendous effort but couldn’t survive the firefight.

Elsewhere on the card, Kal Yafai (20-0, 14 KO) secured a December 10th showdown with WBA Super Flyweight Champion Luis Concepcion with an easy win over the criminally overmatched Johnson Tellez (9-28-5, 6 KO). Brother Gamal was set to defend his Commonwealth super bantamweight title before suffering an injury last week.

Perhaps the most significant story of the card, however, was Craig Cunningham (17-1, 4 KO) stopping 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Anthony Ogogo (11-1, 7 KO) in eight. Cunningham,whom the BBC reports was a twenty-to-one underdog in places, reportedly dominated the fight, dropping Ogogo in the second and ultimately forcing the latter’s corner to stop the fight when he complained of blurred vision.
