Adrien Broner vs. Mikey Garcia – Official weights

Boxingnews24.com

By Jim Dower: A very thin looking Adrien “The Problem” Broner (33-2, 24 KOs) weighed in at 138 ¾ pounds on Friday for his 140 pound catch-weight fight against unbeaten Mikey Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) this Saturday night on Showtime Boxing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Garcia weighed in at 139 ½ pounds.

There was a dramatic difference between how the two fighters looked. Broner looked painfully thin at the weight; whereas Garcia appeared ready to step inside the ring at that moment and start fighting. Garcia, 29, has an advantage in that he’s been fighting at lightweight [135 lbs.] since emerging from a 2 ½ year layoff last year in July. Broner looks like he might have drained himself in the process of taking off the weight for this fight. Broner has been looking painfully thin for weeks, not just this week. We might see another Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. type of performance this Saturday from Broner. Hopefully that’s not the case, but Broner doesn’t look good right now.

Broner making weight saves him from having to pay the steep $500,000 contractually agreed upon weight penalty for the fight. While that a penalty that could have gone either way, it mainly was directed at Broner, because he’s failed to make the 140 lb. weight limit on a number of occasions in the past. Indeed, the last time Broner made 140 was in 2015. He wasn’t interested enough since then for him to put in the work to make the weight.

Broner and Garcia will be fighting for the World Boxing Council Diamond light welterweight title. It’s unclear how much of their purse they’ll be contributing for the sanctioning fee for this WBC strap. It’s not the WBC’s 140 lb. major title that fighters are often eager to get. That belt is currently in the possession of Terence Crawford. Broner and Garcia would have a very tough time trying to beat Crawford to get his WBC belt.

In other weights on the card, former junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (25-0, 19 KOs) weighed in at 159.2 pounds for his WBC middleweight title eliminator against #1 WBC Jorge Sebastian Heiland (29-4-2, 16 KOs). The Argentinian Heiland weighed in at 158.2 lbs. The winner of the Charlo-Heiland fight will be the mandatory challenger for the winner of the Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight, which takes place on September 16. What was surprising was how thin the 27-year-old Charlo looked at the weigh-in. He looked as thin at 159.2 as he had in making weight for his last few fights in the junior middleweight division. This suggests Charlo might not be long for the 160 lb. It’s likely that Charlo will need to eventually move up in weight to super middleweight in the not too distant future.

Heavyweight contender Jarrell Miller (18-0-1, 16 KOs) weighed in at a career high of 298.8 lbs. for his 10 round fight against Gerald Washington (18-1-1, 12 KOs). Washington weighed in at 248 lbs.

Other weights on the card:

Katie Taylor 134.6 vs. Jasmine Clarkson 133.6
Raushee Warren 113.4 vs. McJoe Arroyo 114.8
