Boxing Talk By G. Leon GL: Congrats on your recent victory, can you give us some thoughts on your performance? It was a good performance. I’m happy with the performance, I had a good training camp, a hard training camp with quality sparring partners who got me ready for the fight. I was expecting to go into a war, I thought was going to be a very tough fight and I was happy we came out with the victory the way we did.
GL: You were cut in the second round by a clash of heads. How is your eye doing?
Alex Saucedo: “I got four stitches, they’re already out, but he caught me with a head shot in the second round. We were both trying to come in with punches at the same time and it’s something that happens all the time in boxing. I’m glad we had Abel (Sanchez) in the corner because he was able to handle the cut and stop the bleeding. I’m happy with the outcome. The first round was me just trying to feel him out, I wanted to see what he had. Then after that coach Abel told me to put a little more pressure on him and getting inside a little more and we got a good outcome in the third round.”
GL: You and Abel have now had some time to really get to knock each other, with that being said, do you plan to take your step up fight in 2018?
AS: “Yeah, of course man. I think working together has been something that’s worked out very good for me and I look forward to showing it off against a top opponent and in 2018 I think I will. I think it’s going to happen, a big fight, and I’ll be ready for that because I’ve been waiting for it for a long time.”
GL: With Crawford moving up to welterweight the division is wide open, is there somebody you feel would be the perfect opponent for you to take your career to the next level against?
AS: “With the WBO they have Flanagan and Maurice Hooker fighting for the title and I’m going to be the number one contender for that title and I would love to fight the winner. I would love to fight any of them, it doesn’t matter to me. I leave that up to them, I’m here to fight and I’m ready for the big fight and ready to showcase my talents and show people what I’m really about, and what they’ve been sleeping on.”
GL: How many times would you like to fight next year?
AS: “Three or four for sure.”
GL: Is there anything you’d like to say in closing?
AS: “I appreciate everybody who has been supportive from day one, there’s a lot better things coming. Stay tuned because 2018 will be a great year for team Saucedo.”
