Alistair Overeem seems to be alright despite having gone through a scary moment on Saturday night.
The veteran heavyweight was viciously knocked out by rising contender Francis Ngannou in the first round of their co-main event fight at UFC 218. “The Reem” laid unconscious on the canvas for what felt to be a while after eating a left uppercut from Ngannou.
Hours after his first loss in 2017, Overeem released a short statement via his Twitter account, letting the public know that he is OK and that he plans on continuing his MMA career.
Overeem’s statement can be read below.
No damage and all healthy thankfully.. unfortunately lost today. Props to @francis_ngannou, I got hit with a uppercut from he**, one of his specialities which we new were very dangerous. Some chill time now before back to the drawing
Overeem, a former Strikeforce champion and recent UFC title challenger, is now 43–16 with one no-contest in his MMA career.
The loss to Ngannou snapped a two-fight win streak for Overeem, putting him at 8-5 in the UFC. Ngannou vs. Overeem was a title eliminator bout according to UFC president Dana White.
