There’s never a shortage of big name opponents when you’re name is Conor McGregor.

“The Notorious” is set to take on lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in what is being billed as one of the biggest fights in MMA history at UFC 229 this Saturday, but a legend of the game is waiting in the wings should McGregor seek to continue his history-making ways.

On a recent appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, McGregor expressed interest in someday fighting middleweight great Anderson Silva. Those comments must have made their way to “The Spider”, because he acknowledged being interested in the challenge via Instagram:

“It would be an honor to test myself with Conor McGregor,” Silva wrote in Portuguese (translation via MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz). “He’s an unorthodox fighter and has proven he must be respected. Let’s make it happen.

“The UFC wants superfights, I’m sure fans from all over the world want to see this fight. Professionally, I believe it would be incredible to test my martial arts abilities with a fighter like Conor McGregor in a true superfight. He’s focused on fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov now, after this fight I’m ready for this challenge. When and where he wants.”

Silva, 43, is best known for his legendary 16-fight UFC winning streak, a run that saw him capture middleweight gold in his second fight for the promotion and successfully defend it 10 consecutive times. That title defense streak was the UFC record until it was recently broken by Demetrious Johnson.

It has been 18 months since Silva last competed, a result of him having receiving a one-year suspension from the USADA for ingesting a contaminated supplement.

McGregor, a champion at 145 and 155 pounds, has never competed heavier than welterweight, which he did twice for a pair of lucrative bouts with rival Nate Diaz. But judging by the reaction from both he and Silva, it’s at least a possibility that he makes another jump up for the chance to fight one of the most decorated mixed martial artists of all time.
