RISING super flyweight star Andrew Moloney is locked into training as he prepares for his showdown with impressive Chilean Miguel Gonzalez.

The winner of the world title eliminator on March 22 will put themselves in line for a crack at WBA super flyweight titleholder Khalid Yafai, securing their place as the official mandatory challenger.

Moloney, 28, who already has a host of regional titles to his name, including the prestigious Commonwealth strap amongst others, opened up on training camp and his opponent and his first professional fight abroad.

“Training has been going well with my trainer Angelo Hyder,” said Moloney.

“Angelo has trained some of Australia’s top talent for years and years, so to learn of Angelo and train alongside the likes of my brother Jason, Billel Dib and Bruno Vifuaviwili is improving me as a fighter every day.”

When probed on the opposition that his South American counterpart has faced, Moloney (18-0, 11 KOs) offered a simple assessment.

“Gonzalez is a good fighter and he’s won all but one of his fights for a reason” he explained.

“This fight is really what world title eliminators are about. Two fighters at the top of their game battling it out to see who is number one. Gonzelez is a world level fighter, but I am out to prove I am an elite level fighter on March 22.

“He has a great record and his team have a lot of belief in him.”

Victoria native Moloney has his sights set on the elite of the super flyweight division, which includes the aforementioned WBA titleholder Yafai, impressive WBC ruler Wisaksii Wangek and Nicaraguan legend Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez.

With an assumed marquee year approaching, Moloney elaborated on his future plans.

“I want to be world champion and that is the ultimate goal,” he concluded.

“Fighting someone like Roman Gonzalez at a venue like AAMI Park in Melbourne would be a dream, but my focus in Miguel Gonzalez right now, then onto a big world title clash in 2019.”
