Angel Acosta headlines untelevised Cotto-Ali Prelims

Acosta fought for a WBO belt in May

Not all the matchups are worth writing home about, but the untelevised portion of the December 2nd Miguel Cotto-Saddam Ali card has a decent roster. The headlining bout pits Puerto Rican knockout artist Angel Acosta against Mexico’s Juan Alejo for the interim WBO light flyweight title.

Acosta (16-1, 16 KO) took on Kosei Tanaka for the vacant belt earlier this year, losing a wide decision that saw Tanaka score the only knockdown despite “Tito’s” knockout prowess. While it remains to be seen whether Acosta can stop elite light flyweights, he’s certainly got power, scoring thirteen of those knockouts in four rounds or fewer.

Alejo (24-4, 14 KO) came up well short in his lone title bid, a 2015 fight with Donnie Nietes, but has won five straight since. He’s actually ranked higher than Acosta despite the latter being the A-side, sitting at #4 in the WBO top-10 to Acosta’s #6.

Why they need an interim title when Tanaka just defended his belt in September is beyond me.

Other names on the card include Ronny Rios (28-2, 13 KO) in a get-well fight with Boxrec #273 Deivi Julio Bassa (19-3, 11 KO), plus Irish prospects Jason Quigley and Aaron McKenna against the TBA squad.
