DAVAO CITY (pna) AUG. 14 – Despite its continued dominance in amateur boxing for the past years, the fabled Barangay Una Boxing Team in Panabo City is now planning to upgrade its coaching staff.
Anthony Sasin, a chief of staff of Rep. Antonio “Tonyboy” Floirendo said that they are planning to get new coaching techniques for their current coaches to help improve their Barangay Una Boxing Team.
“We want our coaches to learn more on the new boxing techniques which are now used by the international coaches,” said Sasin.
Barangay Una Boxing Team’s head coach is Ricarte Mancao with the assistant coaches Lelios Siodina, Rey Mancao, Leogene Siodina and Jonas Jerusalem.
Barangay Una Boxing Gym, which is located near the Congressional Office of Panabo along the national highway has also been recently renovated to give more space and better training venue for its amateur boxers, who are also being provided with free scholarships, board and lodging by Rep. Floirendo.
Barangay Una Boxing Team had recently emerged as the over-all champion in this year’s Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet with two golds, two silvers and one bronze medal.
The gold medals were won by light paperweight John Austria and mosquito Dexter Ziganay while the silvers were courtesy of pinweight Christian Betonio and light mosquito John Lee Baldesco. Light flyweight Harold Sayson got the bronze medal.
Lelios Siodina was the head coach for Barangay Una, who was assisted by coach Rolando Oring of DepEd Panabo.
Barangay Una also hauled three golds, two silvers and two bronze medals in the 2017 PRISAA National Games held last April 23-28 in Zambales.
Mark Andy Austria, Paul Julyfer Bascon and John Patrick Dinolan won the golds while Louilee Roy Inson and Eleazar Ganton pocketed the silvers. The bronze medals were captured by Peter Paul Ganton and Jomarie Rubin while the head coach was Ricarte Mancao.
In this year’s Palarong Pambansa held April 23-29 in Antique, Barangay Una also took one gold and a bronze from Carl John Austria and Dexter Ziganay, respectively.
Barangay Una has produced international amateur standouts – 2012 London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga (who is now a pro), two-time SEA Games gold medalist Charly Suarez and 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and Tammer Cup champion Rey Saludar.
Barangay Una’s products are now also already outstanding professional boxers led by current International Boxing Federation (IBF) Word junior bantamweight champion Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas, who was recently given a heroes’ welcome in Panabo last week.
The other pro boxers from Barangay Una are WBO Inter-Continental flyweight champion Froilan “The Sniper” Saludar, WBO Asia Pacific welterweight champion Jay-ar “The Hitman” Inson, WBC Youth Intercontinental lightweight champion Romero “Ruthless” Duno and former WBC Youth Silver WBO Oriental featherweight champion Neil John Tabanao.
