Bellator 159: Melvin Guillard misses weight once again

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Bellator MMA lightweight Melvin Guillard will be competing at a catchweight after failing to make weight for his Bellator 159 co-main event vs. David Rickels.

It’s become a new habit of Melvin Guillard to miss weight, and lo and behold, it happened again today. Guillard weighed in at 157.9 for his lightweight fight againstDavid Rickels, which is 1.9 lbs over the non-title limit of 156, so this Bellator 159 co-main event is now officially a catchweight.

Guillard (32-16-2, 2 NCs) has missed weight on his first attempt a whopping 5 times since August 2012, and this will be the 4th time he’s forced a catchweight. His WSOF debut in July 2014 was a 157 lbs catchweight vs. Gesias Cavalcante. A title fight with Justin Gaethje became a non-title catchweight after he missed by 3.8 pounds, and that was the end of the road for him at WSOF. Guillard’s last bout, a KO loss to Derek Campos, saw him weigh in at 158 on the first try, but eventually cut down to 156 on the re-weigh.

The former UFC contender is currently on a three-fight losing skid, and this latest weigh-in mishap will surely lead to a loss of money once again. Speaking of which, it’s worth sharing this excerpt from his interview with MMAjunkie, as there will be no “full paycheck” due to his failure to make weight, and … well … read the rest for yourself.

“My motivation (for this fight) has been to make sure I get a full paycheck,” Guillard said. “My last three fights in a row have not been a full paycheck. I’m looking forward to get a full paycheck this fight. I also look forward to smacking the (expletive) out of Rickels, and hopefully if he had a girlfriend, I’m going to smack her on the ass, and I’m definitely going to smack his mom’s ass.”

While we’re on the subject of missing weight, headliner Joe Taimanglo came in 2 pounds over, so his fight with undefeated bantamweight standout Darrion Caldwell will also be at a catchweight. To summarize, Bellator’s main and co-main events are now catchweights. Bloody Elbow will have play-by-play coverage and results for tomorrow night’s show, which airs live on Spike at 9 PM ET.
