Bellator 206 results: Gaston Bolanos knocks out Ysidro Gutierrez

Gaston Bolanos was given a slot in the main-card opener of the big Bellator 206 event because the up-and-coming featherweight has already shown a propensity for fireworks in his young career.

And Bolanos delivered on the faith his company placed in him on Saturday night. The Dublin, Calif., resident by way of Peru delivered a second-round knockout of Ysidro Gutierrez to kick off the first DAZN main card at SAP Center in San Jose. The time of the finish was 1:37.

Bolanos (4-1), who had recorded all three of his previous victories in the first round, appeared to be hunting a bit too hard for the finish at times in the first, including missing on a hellacious spinning back elbow. Gutierrez, for his part, did a respectable job countering Bolanos’ attack and making a fight out of it.

But Gutierrez (4-3) had no answer for a wicked left hand which landed by the ear early in the second round. After Gutierrez dropped to his hands and knees, Bolanos connected with a series of left hands, then switched to a series of rights, before referee Mike Beltran waved things off.

Bolanos said it was all a matter of sticking to his coaches’ game plan.

“They said ‘If you get him down don’t worry about him getting back up, get your shots, they’ll be there,’” Bolanos said.
