A bloody faced WBC female flyweight champion Kika Chavez (27-4-3, 4 KOs) retained her green belt in a tempestuous ten round decision against former WBC light flyweight champion Esmeralda “Joya” Moreno (33-9-1, 11 KOs) in a superb action packed fight on Saturday night at the International Arena in the Grand Oasis Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Joya`s intention from the very word go, was all out non stop attack. She was landing with left jabs, followed up with wide left hooks, but Kika was countering effectively with straight rights. Joya was bobbing and weaving to avoid a left jab which is normally as punctual as the Greenwich Time Signal. Kika who`s a skilled counter puncher did increasingly exchange in fierce toe to toe rallies after the half way point. By the sixth her nose was bleeding heavily and this worsened as she was getting mauled a round later. A painful clash of heads in the eighth but fortunately no damage. Joya appeared stronger, but Kika`s honed accuracy didn`t waver.
In the final round both ladies connected with hard left uppercuts and both fought desperately hard, as only firm friends outside the ring do, when it comes down to business, and amistad has to be set aside for ten rounds. Friends again they hugged and congratulated each other after the final bell sounded.
Kika got the majority decision by scores of 96-95, 97-93 and 95-95, successfully defending her title for the third time. It was wafer than nail bitingly close, so much so that a rematch in the near future is surely merited?!
In the co-feature welterweight youthful “Demoledor” Diego Cruz (16-3-1, 13 KOs) stopped grizzled Jose “Piston” Lopez (26-5-2, 15 KOs) at the 2:58 of the eighth round with a hard left hook to the liver.
