Congrats on your victory the other night, can you give us some thoughts on your performance? As far as the fight there wasn’t much to it. We had seen his style and we were practicing on what needed to be done for him the last couple of days before the fight. My original opponent fell out at the last minute, I don’t know what happened to him, but fortunately they found somebody else. I’m glad I got him out of there and I’ve been working on my body shots so I knew I was going to get him out of there with one.
GL: I just spoke to you brother who says he could be returning on July 28th. I imagine this is the kind of activity you’ve been looking for?
Karlos Balderas: “It is! Most likely my brother will be on that card, but I won’t. I don’t want to be fighting on the same cards as my brother, especially not right before him. He fought right before me on this card, so I’ll probably be back in the ring right before him or right after him. Now it’s just on to the next.”
GL: Do you feel like you’re ready for a step up bout? I’m not talking about jumping in there with a world rated contender right now, but just somebody who is going to provide you with more resistance.
KB: “Yeah. I’m ready bro.”
GL: Have you been aggressively relaying that info to your team or just focused on your business which is handling whoever they put in front of you?
KB: “I don’t really know bro, I don’t really care who I fight. As long as I’m putting in my work in the gym it’s not going to matter who I fight. It’s like I said this last opponent was given to me at the very last minute and it was no problem. We original had an opponent that was supposed to be better, but like I said he fell out and I don’t even know why. I do know that I’m only going to keep getting better the better my opponents get.”
GL: Before the fight we were talking about you taking a more patient approach, taking your time in there and not coming out too too fast, and then this fight is another first round knockout.
KB: “It’s pretty funny man. I was picking my shots a little bit better and I felt like I was more composed in there.”
GL: Jose told me he wants three more fights before the end of the year, how many more times would you like to fight in 2018?
KB: “Absolutely. Definitely two at least, three would be better if we could get it though.”
GL: Shoot if they keep going one round you might be able to get four.
KB: (laughs) “Yeah that’s true.”
GL: What did you think of the Santa Cruz-Mares rematch?
KB: “It was pretty cool. I was really looking forward to the Charlo fight, but that was just alright, the main event was a better fight. I honestly thought Charlo was going to stop him. I saw the Leo fight going the same way the first one did and it pretty much did.”
GL: Abner is a terrific fighter, Leo is just a bad style for him. To me it looked a lot like the first fight as well.
KB: “Definitely. Leo is awkward, I’ve sparred with him a lot and he’s very awkward.”
GL: Closing thoughts?
KB: “Me and my brother are coming, we’re going to stay in shape because these fights are going to be coming fast and we’re going to be active. I want to go six rounds already. I haven’t even fought a full six rounds yet, and I want to move my way up to eight rounds, but I’m going to keep working and I’ll see you guys soon.”
