PUERTO Princesa, Palawan — Jeronil “El Diamante” Borres of Highland Boxing Gym landed more telling blows to win by a majority decision against Robert “El Rapido” Onggocan of Olivetti Stable and captured the vacant Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) flyweight title last Nov. 10 at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum here.
Borres, a native of Camiguin Island improved his record to eight wins with five knockouts against three losses and one draw.
Onggocan, who is the current IBF Youth flyweight champion, suffered only his second defeat against nine wins. He also previously dropped a unanimous decision to Mirco Martin last August 12 in Germany.
The 22-year old Borres finally won a title after two failed attempts. His first title fight was when he lost by a majority decision to Richard Claveras for the interim OPBF flyweight crown last Sept. 30, 2016 in Bacoor, Cavite.
Borres then went to Chuncheon, South Korea to fight Joo Hyun Jung for the vacant WBC Eurasia Pacific Boxing Council flyweight title last February 11.
Borres downed Jung twice in Round 3 but still lost by a hometown decision.
“Masayang masaya po ako na nag champion na talaga ako,” said Borres, who was awarded a golden belt by ABF president Naris Singwancha.
“Nagbunga din ang pagsisikap ni Borres sa training,” said manager Brico Santig. (LITO DELOS REYES)
