Boxing champ Clarissa Shields to Cyborg: You shouldn’t have been trying to ‘brawl’ at UFC 232

Not like this.

Many fans expected a technical back-and-forth fight between Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes at UFC 232, but ‘The Lioness’ starched her fellow Brazilian inside 51 seconds of the opening round.

Cyborg, real name Cristiane Justino, came out guns blazing but was countered after almost every attack. Nunes, who became the first female double-champ in UFC history, proved to be the superior boxer on the night.

Multiple-weight boxing champion Clarissa Shields, however, believes the outcome would have been different if Cyborg had stuck to the gameplan and refused to brawl.

In a recent video blog released by Cyborg showcasing before and after footage of her UFC 232 defeat to Nunes, Shields is seen criticising the former UFC women’s featherweight champion in the locker room.

“What the fuck?” Shields told Cyborg in the locker room, per MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz. “I’m not mad about the loss. I’m mad because you know how to fucking box. You shouldn’t have been out there just trying to brawl. What you do that for? No. You fucking jab with me. Jab with her short ass. What the fuck?”

Cyborg only has one fight left on her UFC contract, and the former multiple-promotion champ is hoping to negotiate a rematch against Nunes, although UFC president Dana White is not too enthusiastic about the matchup.

”The first thing I did after the fight was message my manager and say ‘man, I want a rematch,’” Cyborg said. “I (was) 13 years undefeated, I have three belts in different organizations, different matchmakers, different fighters, and I think I deserve that. And I don’t think you guys want to see a different fight. Everybody wanna watch this rematch.

”I know I have my last fight in the contract with the UFC, we gonna make everything possible we can do to make this fight happen. If it doesn’t happen, 2019 is just starting. I want you guys know I want to fight a lot and I want to do the biggest fights and money I can make this year and continue my legacy.”
